ESTABLISHED 1889

Our History

Elmwood Heritage Inn was built in 1889 as a private residence on what was once part of the Sidmount Estate. Set back from North River Road along a long, tree-lined drive, the home was designed to reflect both prominence and permanence.

The house was designed by renowned Island architect William Critchlow Harris, whose work helped shape much of Charlottetown’s architectural character (check out Beaconsfield Historic Inn!). Elmwood is a strong example of the Queen Anne Revival style, with its asymmetrical form, varied rooflines, tall windows, and distinctive detailing that remains visible today.

The home was built for Arthur Peters, a prominent Island figure who would go on to serve as Premier of Prince Edward Island from 1901 until 1908. Coming from a well-known family with ties to the Cunard shipping legacy, Peters’ life and career were closely tied to both public service and the broader maritime history of the region.

In 1913, the home was purchased by Lieutenant Colonel Arthur G. Peake, a member of another prominent family with roots in the Island’s shipbuilding and merchant history. Peake served in the First World War as Commander of the 8th Siege Battery of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His family would remain in the home for many years, continuing its legacy as a place of both family life and quiet distinction.

Over time, the house evolved, and in the early twentieth century was divided into apartments. In 1986, it was carefully restored to a single residence and later established as an inn by Jay and Carol MacDonald, who created a warm and welcoming place for guests that has endured for decades.

Today, Elmwood continues in that tradition. Its long driveway, mature trees, and preserved architectural details remain central to its character, offering guests a stay that feels both grounded in history and connected to the present.

Today, Elmwood Heritage Inn welcomes guests from around the world who are drawn to homes with stories and tree lined streets, and islands with red sand beaches.
